HAPPY NEW YEAR, EVERYONE!
“Out with the old, in with the new” is so apt for this time in our lives.
Many commentators are saying that 2020 was the worst year any of us experienced, and the deprivation brought on by the pandemic could certainly make it so.
So many people were affected by the covid-19; such as sequestration, being kept apart from our loved ones and our friends, long, sometimes lonely days as we protect ourselves and others, and the fury that many of us feel at the botched handling of the virus by the federal government. We also don’t understand the refusal to wear masks when all our lives are at stake.
We are also enduring massive unemployment, hunger, and food lines that haven’t been seen ever in our history, including the Great Depression.
The Sole Sistas have been busy putting together food packages and disbursing gift cards and checks for our members in need. We will continue to make sure Survivors in need are not food insecure.
The first day of 2021 doesn’t change any of these facts, but it does signal new beginnings and hope with a new administration that things will get better. The vaccines have arrived, and now the goal will be to get them in the arms of every citizen. There is great hope that the new administration has a sustainable plan to do just that.
We’re hoping that the new congress will quit fiddling around and will appropriate enough funds to take care of the American people. As a non-profit support group, the Sole Sistas speak to many Survivors who have lost their jobs, worry about how to pay their rent, have to go on food lines and see their medical bills rising with no way to pay.
The malarkey about the federal deficit being affected is nonsense; we have a national emergency on our hands, and what good is government if it isn’t there for us all?
So with a new enlightened approach to the pandemic, with massive distribution of the vaccine and federal help to the states and municipalities to administer it and some real monetary assistance to small business and the people, we should begin to see a true turning of the corner and hopefully, by the end of this New Year the remnants of covid-19 will be in tatters and we will be able to resume life as we always knew it.
The Sole Sistas have continued to mentor our Survivors through this pandemic. We are learning that the Survivors need us more than ever. They are not only fighting cancer; they are working hard to keep themselves and their families safe from this virus.
The Sole Sistas are poised to spring forward when that moment comes, and we plan to become an even greater influence on our members and the community.
So, we wish you a Happy, Healthy, and Prosperous New Year, and we know you will continue to wear your mask, wash your hands, and socially distant until that golden day arrives.
